Somali-Bantu Community Association
Founded as an informal ethnic community-based organization (ECBO) to establish a collective voice and empower fellow refugees through education, beginning with humble living room meetings for afterschool tutoring.
Expansion & Relocation
Relocated to 302 Burt Street to meet the emerging needs of nearly 200 clients, expanding service delivery and outreach to the growing refugee community.
Strategic Growth
Significant funding from ORR and CNYCF allowed hiring part-time staff and expanding services. Staff development programs enhanced organizational capacity and leadership.
RISE is Born
Adopted new name "Refugee and Immigrant Self-Empowerment" (RISE) to reflect dedication to serving oppressed, persecuted, and disenfranchised peoples from all over the world.
Program Expansion
Awarded additional ORR grants for Refugee Agriculture Partnership and Individual Development Account Program. Expanded education and women's empowerment programs with support from multiple foundations.
Thriving Community Hub
Now with 27 staff members (75% former refugees), RISE represents inclusivity and self-determination, providing services to nearly 400 refugee and immigrant families from over 25 nations annually.

Programming & Community Benefits
RISE provides crucial services including bridging case management, interpretation, employment services, citizenship programs, adult literacy, women's empowerment, and youth programs. Unlike traditional resettlement agencies with 90-day limits, RISE provides ongoing support ensuring all New Americans can lead productive lives and successfully integrate into their communities.
Our employment services have helped dozens gain full and part-time employment, contributing to the local economy and reducing public assistance needs. Our focus on women and youth addresses unique challenges within these demographics, building confidence and fostering intercultural exchange.
